Director of Product Development
Department: ResearchDevelopment Reports to: Chief Scientific Officer
Under the direction of the CSO, the Director of Product Development will manage all activities for new product development. This will include products for orthopedic, surgical, cosmetic applications and tissue repair with a focus on hyaluronic based products. The position will develop the Company's R&D infrastructure in collaboration with the CSO.
Specific Responsibilities
Help define the strategic R&D direction in collaboration with the CSO and Senior Management Team
Responsible for initiating, directing and executing all development projects for new products
Responsible for the supervision of R&D personnel and daily activities in Bedford
Responsible for the compliance of all product development efforts with ISO and FDA requirements, and the creation and proper maintenance of R&D related design dossiers
Coordinate with Marketing for design inputs of new products
Coordinate with Engineering for product scale up and manufacturing process transfer
Help secure intellectual properties through innovation and invention; contribute to the drafting of inventive ideas for patent applications and prosecution
Write scientific and technical documents to support the needs of publications, regulatory submissions, business partnerships and marketing
Manage external scientific and developmental collaborations as required
Help evaluate and form associations with other sources of technology and licensing opportunities such as university research labs, technology centers and industry leaders
Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies and new theories,and achieve objectives creatively and effectively
Interface with various departments and provide technical advice as needed
Qualified candidates for this position will have the following level of education and experience:
Ph.D. in scientific discipline, preferably Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomaterials or Biology
5 to 10 years research experience, preferably in an industrial environment with close ties to academia
Post doctoral experience may serve as experience
Experience in product development, specifically bringing products to market or, at a minimum, bringing research concepts to development for commercialization
Management experience with 1) directing projects, 2)supervising scientists and their work and 3)directing contract or collaborative work
Familiarity with the patent process, preferably holds patents
Knowledgeable and experienced in the scientific presentation process including author with numerous publications and presentations at scientific meetings
Experience with external funding mechanisms such as NIH, SBIR and other granting bodies; ability to write grants and raise money
Experience and expertise with polymer chemistry, orthopaedics, tissue engineering, cell biology, drug delivery, glucosaminoglycans (HA), or biomaterials
Well organized with the ability to handle multiple projects
Lifelong learner; willing to tackle new disciplines. Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts
Reputation as an emerging leader in the field with sustained performance and accomplishment
Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought
